Evelyn | Voices from the Buses

Evelyn Margarita, Latina Service Worker: Speaks about the difficulties of getting to work after a bus line that she used was eliminated and urges politicians to stop taking advantage of working-class tax payers. [Spanish]

Transcription and translation below.

Evelyn: They [The bus service cuts] are going to affect me in terms of getting work because I am going to have to take several buses. And then well, if they are going to cut weekend service [on the 757] I work Saturday and Sunday so I am going to have trouble getting to my jobs. The buses are the only form of transportation I have. So I don't think what they are doing is fair, because, if it wasn't for us the bus riders, the drivers wouldn't have work. I don't think this is right. And they make fares so high! And one has to pay it anyway even if you don't work all week. Yeah I don't think this is right.

Interviewer: Tell me how you where affected by the December bus service cuts:

Evelyn: Oh I was affected because I used to take the red one that used to pass through Beverly and now well the 14 takes way too long, it doesn't run very often. Sometimes I wait an hour or 45 minutes. Because sometimes I get there and the bus already passed so then I have to wait a long time. Or in the afternoon, because there is a school there on Fairfax, sometimes it is crowded with students and they won't let you get on. They don't pick you up, you stay at the bus stop, sometimes two or three buses pass you up and that is a problem.
Well I would like them to cooperate and to support us too because we are people who contribute to this country paying our taxes, we also have rights. And they are here to help us and support us too like we supported them when we gave them our vote.
