Excerpted from text:
The Bus Riders Union’s Clean Air and Economic Justice Plan is a proposal to greatly expand Los Angeles County’s public transportation infrastructure. To advance a new bus-centered model for urban transportation and economic development, the Bus Riders Union (BRU) believes the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) can and should seize the opportunity created by:
• the recently passed half-cent county-wide transportation sales tax, Measure R;
• federal government funds from the recent economic stimulus package;
• and the upcoming Federal Surface Transportation Act.
The BRU plan will provide desperately needed economic relief for the County’s low- and very low-income transit dependent population. It will create an efficient, affordable system that can attract thousands of new riders. It will also address the twin economic and environmental crises, generating thousands of well-paying green jobs while reducing automobile emissions that fuel global warming and toxic air pollution.
