Before most of the US even had a chance to see for themselves, Oliver Stone’s new documentary filmSouth of the Border was making headlines because of its sharp critique of the US influence in Latin America, theyellow journalism of the corporate media, and the platform the film gives to anti-imperialist heads of state likeHugo Chavez and Bolivia’s Evo Morales. Mark Weisbrot, who co-wrote the film with renowned British activist Tariq Ali, reflects on the film’s strengths and how criticism from the New York Times, the LA Times, and other US media outlets reflects precisely what’s wrong with US understandings of the Latin America Left.  Mark Weisbrot is Co-Director of the Washington DC-based Center for Economic & Policy Research. He’s an economist who writes a regular column for the Guardian of London and for a major newspaper in Brazil on Latin America politics and global economic issues.
