CathiTactaquin.jpgSheriff Joe Arpaio has drawn national attention for notoriously abusive, often overtly racist immigration enforcement practices in Maricopa County, Arizona. Efforts by local immigrant and civil rights activists-increasingly joined by activists nationwide-to challenge Sheriff Joe and remove him office have reach a crescendo pitch this week as activists from around the country descend on Phoenix this weekend for a mobilization against Arpaio. While the Department of Homeland Security announced last fall that it would terminate its agreement with Maricopa County under the 287g program - which effectively deputizes local cops to enforce immigration laws on the streets - Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has expanded enforcement programs like 287g. As immigrant rights advocates in the beltway prepare for a legislative fight for comprehensive immigration reform, what's happening to immigrant communities at the local level and what are the key fights at the local level and in Washington to defend the rights of immigrant communities under assault? Catherine Tactaquin of the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and Sarahi Uribe from the National Day Labor Organizing Network, joining us from Phoenix amidst preparations for the weekend mobilization, talk with host Eric Mann.
