BobFertik.jpgAfter six months of intense debate, Congress is on the verge of passing historic health care reform legislation. Yet a process that began ostensibly with the goal of fixing a broken, profit-driven health care system has gotten dangerously off track. Repeatedly compromise and capitulation have created a bill that would require uninsured individuals and families to purchase private insurance with high premiums and would hand over $476 billion in public subsidies to the very private insurance industry responsible for the current crisis. Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, a Harvard Medical School professor and co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program, explains why her organization is calling for the defeat of the Senate bill. Bob Fertik, longtime Democratic Party activist and progressive blogger with Democrats.com, discusses strategies for defeating the current bill and getting the reform process back on track to offer a real fix for the current system.
