Nina Moreno: Children's Defense Fund takes on the cradle-to-prison pipeline
hosted by Manuel Criollo on 03/02/2009
With 2.3 million people behind bars, the US is by far the biggest jailer in the world. 41% of them, or nearly one million of them are black and another 20%, or 460,000, are Latino. California leads the way in mass incarceration: 175,000 people currently locked up, with a plan to expand prison capacity by 53,000 using taxpayer dollars. The Children's Defense Fund asks why a black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime and a Latino boy a 1 in 6 chance? What are the conditions facing children of color and poor children that put them on the pipeline to prison rather than to college and good jobs? Children's Defense Fund Project Director Nina Morena in conversation with Manuel Criollo
