When the California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage earlier this year, it set the stage for a major electoral fight that will culminate with next week’s election. Attempting to overturn the court’s ruling, opponents of gay marriage have placed Proposition 8 on the ballot, a proposed constitutional amendment. In a sign of the high stakes of California’s decision for the rest of the country, advocates and opponents of Prop 8 have raised nearly $60 million, making it the most costly ballot initiative campaign in the country this year.
