The Senate released two different jobs bill last week but neither of them include any funds to help cities across the country facing severe transit cuts, fare increases, and job lay-offs due to restrained transit operation budgets.
This is a regression from the House bill released last December which, included 10% of transit money to be allowed for spending on transit operations.
Transit operation funding is vital to the overall economic well-being of our communities. It can provide much relief for those bearing the brunt of the economic crisis--many low income communities of color that rely on public transit as their sole means of transportation. Jobs in public transit are one of the last remaining good public sector jobs for working class people.
