November Monthly Meeting Agenda

1) Planning Committee Nominations are here!
Elections for Planning Committee, the leadership body of the BRU, take place at the January monthly meeting. Beginning in November and then again at the December meeting, members will nominate other members or themselves to run. In order to qualify to run, you must have attended at least four monthly meetings during the year, have your membership dues up to date, and must be able to attend Planning Committee meetings every Wednesday night. In order to be able to vote in January, you must have also attended four meetings during the year and your dues must be current and paid by the January meeting. You may pay your dues for 2009 at this month's meeting. If you are not sure what your dues status is please call 213-387-2800 and ask to speak to a BRU organizer regarding your dues.

2.) Breakthroughs for the BRU and the Clean Air and Economic Justice Plan & a Public Hearing to hear from YOU!!
For those of you who were at the October MTA Board meeting, may know that we had two major breakthroughs on the same day that the MTA Board of Directors approved the 30 year Long Range Transportation Plan, a plan that proposes 14 fare increases and service cuts for bus riders. On this day, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas stood up for bus riders to protect the 20% of Measure R funds for a bus system improvement plan and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stepped up and asked MTA staff to produce this plan for bus improvements. (see flier for more details).

These are two key steps towards making the Clean Air and Economic Justice Plan a reality. This month we want to hold a public hearing for YOU to help bring this plan to life and hearing from BRU members
1.) what are your real concerns/problems/issues with the bus system
2.) where are the improvements really needed and what could they look like

You are the experts therefore come ready to be a transit planner for the day! This will only help us strengthen our plan when we hope to present it at the December 10th MTA Board meeting.
