Carlos Montes on Chicano Civil Rights
© The Strategy Center 2008
Carlos Montes was a leader of the Chicano Blowouts, a
momentous uprising that took place in Los Angeles 40 years ago this week. In protest of educational inequity, hundreds of predominantly Chicano students in East L.A. walked out of school to demand the inclusion of Mexican/Chicano history and culture in California curriculum. The Blowouts were a part of a growing Chicano civil rights and anti-war movement, with the Chicano Moratorium against the Vietnam war following 2 years later. Carlos joins us to share his story of protest and resistance.
