The UN World Conference Against Racism held in Geneva, Switzerland April 20-24 was called the Durban Review Conference because it was building on the historic conference in Durban, South Africa in 2001. Like Durban, the Geneva conference was marred by efforts to undermine and discredit the conference by the US and its Western allies, especially Israel. Yet the actions of the West, their efforts to duck responsibility for their own racist record, did not stop the conference and its sister civil society gathering from taking important steps forward in the global movement against racism. Ajamu Baraka, a veteran of the Black Liberation Movement and recognized international human rights advocate, talks about the meaning of Obama's boycott, what happened in Geneva, and efforts to hold the US accountable under international law for its record of racism and human rights abuses.
