1 mile bus-only lane project.jpgThe recommendation for Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes came out of a study for alternative transit options on the Wilshire corridor where a Bus Rapid Transit alternative was recommended in 2000 and subsequently voted down by L.A. City Council who has the jurisdiction over the city streets.

In 2004, a one-mile bus-only lanes project was implemented from Barrington to Centinela Avenues along Wilshire Boulevard championed by former Councilmember Cindy Miscicowski of council district 11.

 

Launch of Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes Now Campaign!

In 2005, the Clean Air, Clean Lungs, Clean Buses Campaign launched the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes Campaign. We immediately hit the streets to protect the 1-mile bus-only lane that was threatened to be cut by the LA City Council. Demanding that the 1-mile project be expanded from Downtown to Santa 12-5-07 Frontfund Wilshire BOL now  press conf and day of action.JPGMonica we went organizing door-to-door and built a coalition of over 150 local businesses, environmental organizations, community organizations and institutions along the Wilshire Corridor in support of the bus-only lanes project. We've mobilized over 100 allies and members to testify in support of the Wilshire BOL during the past 5 years at LA City Transportation Committee Meetings, City Council, MTA, Public Hearings, and Rallies.

Timeline 1 - May 2000.jpg  The Los Angeles City Council unanimously votes against theWilshire BRT/BOL Project including 24 hour dedicated bus-lanes.
 Timeline 2 - August 2002.jpg Metro completes Final Environmental Impact Report
 Timeline 3 - November 2003.jpg Los Angeles City Council approves motion proposed by councilmember Cindy Miscicowski of district 11 authorizing to implement 1 mile bus-only lane pilot project on Wilshire Blvd. from Federal to Centinela.
 Timeline 4 - March 2004.jpg Peak period bus only lanes are implemented as a pilot project.
 Timeline 5 - May 2005.jpg New district 11 councilmember Bill Rosendahl is elected and wants to remove the 1-mile bus-only lane.
 Timeline 6 - Fall 2005.jpg BRU starts organizing businesses and institutions along Wilshire to support the project and initiates mass pressure campaign urging City Council and Mayor Villaraigosa to keep the 1-mile bus-only lane and extend it from Downtown LA to Santa Monica.
 Timeline 7 - November 2005.jpg City Council moves to suspend 2 blocks from 1 mile bus-only lanes project-from Federal Ave. to Centinela Ave while studying the implementation of full bus-only lanes.
 Timeline 8 - April 2007.jpg LA City Council approves to implement a full Wilshire BOL from Downtown LA to West LA and suspends the 1 mile bus-only lane from Barrington to Centinela.
 Timeline 9 - September 2007.jpg MTA submits "Very Small Starts" Capital Grant application requesting funding for the $27 million Wilshire BRT/BOL project in the FY2009 budget to the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA).
 Timeline 10 - March 2009.jpg Congress approves the first $9.8 million for the Wilshire BOL Project.
 Timeline 11 - September 2009.jpg Congress approves $13.5 million, the second installment of federal funding for the Wilshire BOL.
