$18,000 raised at the Evening of Los Angeles Solidarity with the New Orleans and Gulf Coast Movements of Resistance:

  • We raised $18,000 (over and above all the costs for the event) for Community Labor United (a coalition of over 50 grassroots groups in the Gulf Coast) -- Many thanks to the 250+ attendees (whose door donations went to the fund) and the dozens of members, friends, and community allies who made donations during the appeal. Thank you also to everyone who sent in donations but were unable to attend the event.
  • The packed house enjoyed outstanding speeches and a performance by the Bus Riders Union Youth Drum and Chant Corps.
  • Curtis Muhammad of Community Labor United, and Xochitl Bervera of Families & Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children brought us gripping stories of the Hurricane aftermath and the tremendous work being done to rebuild the movement and develop unity and national support around a set of demands that they discuss in their talks, which you can listen to below.

Eric on the "Letter in Support": "We live at a time when Right-wing racists are so emboldened that Pat Robertson calls for the assassination of freedom-fighter Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, and former Education Secretary William Bennett, the architect of the war on drugs that has contributed to 1 million Black people being in prison today, stated, "If you want to reduce crime you could abort every Black baby in the country." The defense of the New Orleans movement offers a hopeful opportunity for a major assault on the forces of reactionwhat this "Letter in Support" calls a Third Reconstruction. Today, the embattled Black people are under unbearable assault, and are in great need of friends and allies willing to go to the mat to fight against white supremacy and imperialism."
