Let the World Breathe

Ever wonder why you rarely pass a day on the streets without suffering from irritated eyes, nose, fatigue, headaches, and shortness of breath?  If you answered yes to any of this, you’re suffering from the chronic air pollution spewed by 7 million cars passing through L.A.

What is Smog? Smog or ground level ozone is not emitted directly but created when Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs- among them cancer causing chemicals like Benzene and Formaldehyde) emitted by cars and factories, react together in the sun. While ozone up high protects us from the sun’s UV rays, ground level ozone is a highly corrosive gas that can erode rubber and plastic. The resulting brownish haze of toxic chemical soup acts as a powerful oxidant and overtime can damage lung and heart tissues, trigger asthma attacks and heart failure.

The brownish haze of toxic chemical soup we breathe everyday acts as a powerful oxidant that can damage lung and heart tissues, trigger asthma attacks and heart failures.

Fight Drive by Pollution! Despite his promise to make Los Angeles the “greenest, cleanest city in the world,” Mayor Villaraigosa’s Transportation Plan over the past 3 years reflects privileding cars not busriders. From lobbying for the 405 freeway expansion to his proposal to convert local streets into mini-freeways like on Pico-Olympic Boulevards, his plans only help fuel the auto attack on Black and Brown communities living near freeways and major corridors.  We need the Mayor to reverse his auto expanding policies by funding real environmental projects like bus-only lanes and stopping the 375,000 hours of MTA bus service cuts.  Join the Bus Riders Union’s fight for a Clean Air City.

Call or Email the Mayor and urge him to:

Stop MTA’s Service Cuts and Upfront Funds for Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes!
