Supporters of the Wilshire Bus-Only Lane Campaign
“As we speak, people on the Pacific islands of Samoa, Tuvalu, and Black people in New Orleans are dying from “extreme weather events” in which coastlines are now fair game for supersized hurricanes and storms. LA is at the center of a world assault on the 3rd world, and many of our people, in Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific Islander communities suffer both here and in their homelands from toxic emissions. We need a 50% reduction in auto emission and bus-only lanes are one step towards reducing the deadly emissions of the auto, and for once, giving public transportation and the bus priority. The US is the biggest part of the problem. LA must become part of the solution.”

“We live in a city with over 8 million vehicles that emit a toxic brew of chemicals into the air, including carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Cars emit Particulate Matter (PM), which can travel deep into lungs increasing the risk of respiratory diseases and cancer. It is therefore imperative that we take significant steps to take cars off the road through providing fast, reliable public transportation.”

Letter to Mayor Villaraigosa
“The one-mile bus-only lane pilot project on Wilshire Boulevard has already illustrated the success of bus-only lanes in reducing travel time (by as much as 14% so far) and increasing bus reliability.”
L.A. Co. Metropolitan Trnsportation Authority (LACMTA)
Report on the 1 mile project
The LCSC and BRU’s campaign for Wilshire bus-only lanes (BOL) puts buses, the needs of Black, Latino, API, and working class transit dependant, and children’s health first, while addressing our responsiblity to the 3rd world and communities most devastatingly impacted by global warming.
Combined with frequent bus service a bus-only lane on Wilshire Blvd. has the capacity to carry 6,000 passengers per hour while a car lane moves only about 1,200 drivers.
After 4 years of public pressure, the LA City Council finally approved a plan to implement peak-hour bus-only lanes on Wilshire from Downtown to West LA. The Federal Transit Administration has also approved $23.3 million in funding for this project. However, the timeline for its implementation is 2011 which is too far into the future. We urge the Mayor and the city to prioritize this project by upfronting funding and implementing the project before 2011.

A growing number of businesses and institutions see bus-only lanes as helpful or acceptable to their interests, while they have a broader social consciousness about their responsibility to society.
