Pollution Watch Series #8: Benzene: One More Reason for Joining the Fight to Reduce Autos in Los Angeles
by Duyen Tran on Friday, April 9, 2010
Benzene is a dangerous gas that is emitted from car and truck exhaust fumes. It damages blood cells, the bone marrow, the kidneys, liver, lungs, heart and brain which increase the risk of leukemia and blood cancer. Because working class black and brown Los Angelinos are the most susceptible to these health concerns because they live along the city's most congested transit corridors, allowing cars to continue to emit benzene is a direct attack on the city's most marginalized communities.
