Pollution Watch Series #6: We Never Stop Breathing LA's Lethal Air
by Duyen Tran on Friday, April 9, 2010
Los Angeles residents suffer daily from eyes and nose irritation, fatigue, headaches and breathing problems. Withover 7 million cars passing through the city daily, smog fills the air and the lungs of Angelinos and the anticipated 2.4 million more people expected to live in Los Angeles by 2030. Nitrogen oxides and Volatile Organic Compounds emitted by cars and factories create smog or ground level ozone that is highly corrosive and can erode rubber/plastic, damage lungs and heart tissues, and trigger asthmas attacks and heart complications. Higher temperatures caused by global warming exacerbate the problem as they intensify the smog intake.
