Pollution Watch Series #2: Fight for Your Children and Grandchildren’s Lungs
by Duyen Tran on Friday, April 9, 2010
Children living in Los Angeles, 80% of whom are Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific Islander, breathe in more than their share of air toxins during the first 2 months of their lives and therefore are subject to developing asthma, cardiovascular illnesses, and even premature death. Cuts in environment regulations in favor of profits for oil and gas businesses have resulted in the black and brown children and elderly filling up emergency rooms with chronic breathing problems. Premature death stands as a real threat for children in Los Angeles if we continue to allow the MTA to prioritize rail and cars over buses.
