Councilmember Wendy Greuel Fund Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes Now!

NAME: Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes
AGE: About 8 years. In 2000 MTA raided the Bus-Only Lanes fund to fund Expo Light Rail, shortly after L.A. City Council voted it down unanimously
DESCRIPTION: right hand lanes for buses during peak hours, can move 6,000 people in an hour by bus vs. 1200 by car
LAST SEEN: August 2007 at At L.A. City Council when they voted to officially
implment bus-only lanes on Wilshire Boulevard

In August of 2007, after three years of fighting tooth and nail for it, the Bus Riders Union witnessed the final adoption of the Wishire bus-only lanes at L.A. City Council, an effort led by Councilmember Wendy Greuel. Only a few months later, MTA and L.A. City Council applied for $27 million in federal funds to implement the project right away. Unfortunately, it’s been a year and the federal funds have not arrived and there has been no real commitment from L.A. City Council to secure other funds to make this project a reality.

As Chair of the City Transportation Committee, Councilmember Greuel has remained supportive of the Wilshire bus-only lanes project despite many setbacks--but this year has been too long! Over six months ago, Councilmember Greuel committed to have monthly progress reports on the project and to look for alternative funding, but there’s been no real response from her office.

The reduction of auto use in L.A. is a life and death issue, especially for Black and Latino children with the highest rates of asthma and respiratory disease. We can’t just keep lamenting the trajedy of those in the Gulf Coast and Galveston, Cuba and Mexico who have been hit by very “un-natural” disasters and sit back while the auto in L.A. wages a war on the world! Elected officials who are serious about fighting global warming, have to aggressively implement policies which puts high capacity buses before single passenger autos. We are on the brink of a major environmental breakthrough and your leadership is critical today to make bus-only lanes a reality. Join us to call on Councilmember Wendy Greuel to secure the $27 million needed for the Wilshire Bus-Only Lanes project immediately--a first step in creating a countywide network of bus-only lanes to reduce pollution and global warming.
