Following in the tradition of civil rights heroines of generations past, 5 members of the Bus Riders begin a Hunger Fast for Justice on Th

ursday, May 20 to protest MTA's fare increases and service cuts.

On July 1, MTA plans to raise your fares 20%: $75 monthly pass, $6 day pass, $1.50 for one ride. And they’ll cut 388,000 hours of bus service. The fasters and their supporters share the experience of hundreds of thousands of bus riders like you -- people who will be forced by this fare increase to make impossible choices between feeding our children, putting clothes on their backs, paying rent, going to the doctor -- or paying bus fare. MTA’s fare increase and service cuts are two blows in the war on Black and Latino families -- alongside 700 LA city employees losing their job, utility rates and rents going up, and threats to eliminate CALWorks. We must ask MTA Board members LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Councilmember Jose Huizar, and Supervisor Gloria Molina: Which side are you on? As the MTA claims to be broke, the Board is aggressively pushing a mutli-billion dollar plan to build freeways and rail. MTA is asking Washington for an $8 billion loan for these projects, but can’t find $25 million to avoid a fare increase that will punish Black & Latino bus riders.
