The Community Rights Campaign, Youth Justice Coalition, and the LA Chapter of Dignity in Schools, secures verbal directive by Interim Chief Mike Bowman on ending the practice of giving out Tardy/Truancy tickets in and around LAUSD schools, under Los Angeles Municipal Code 45.04: Day Time Curfew code.

 

We are excited to announce that LAUSD Board Member Tamar Galatzan
has withdrawn her motion to deputize police officers to give $250
"truancy" tickets to students while on school grounds! This decision followed a successful action on King and Vermont led by our Community Rights Taking Action students. Our defeat of the Galatzan proposal broke open a discussion about the negative impacts of truancy tickets

The LAPD has agreed to a number of important concessions, but we still have work to do.

"Alarmingly, the data we have reviewed to date shows that enforcement of the daytime curfew law is in targeted areas with underresourced schools and communities, resulting in disproportionate police and court contact, curfew tickets, and fines for low-income students and families of color."
