The Bus Riders Union holds a monthly membership meeting every 3rd Saturday of the month at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church.

Campaign to Stop MTA's Racist Fare Hike

As many of you know and may have experienced, 5 BRU leaders entered an 8-day hunger fast to protest and highlight the severity of the impacts that MTA's proposed fare increase would have on our communities. This tactic came to be known as the BRU's Hunger Fast for Justice given that the fare increase would impact some of the most vulnerable people in the county already being hit by cuts at all levels of government. We occupied a park at the historic Placita Olvera and named it Rosa Parks Tent City.

The 8 days that followed the launching of the Hunger were some of the most transformative, amazing and consolidating experiences for many of those that supported and experienced the encampment and the beauty that was Rosa Parks Tent City. The objectives of this tactic were to mobilize a broader base of bus riders and our allies to put pressure on our key targets on the MTA Board such as Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilmember Jose Huizar and Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas with the hope that they would introduce a motion to hold a public hearing and a public vote on the proposed 2010 fare increase.

Come to the next monthly meeting ready to share your own experiences of the encampment or if you missed it come ready to listen to the tactics, the developments and the next steps in the campaign to Stop MTA's Racist Fare Increase. We have plenty of pictures and videos that documented this historic moment in time but now what we need to do is have a deeper strategy conversation about what we are willing to do from here on out. We must continue to be in the faces of our key targets and build a broader citywide force that lets them know that "we have had it up to here" and business as usual will not continue as long as justice is not served.

Campaña para Detener la Alza de Tarifa Racista de la MTA

Como muchos de ustedes saben y experimentaron, cinco líderes del SDP entraron en un ayuno de hambre por ocho días para protestar y alzar conciencia alrededor de la gravedad de los impactos que la alza de tarifas propuesto por la MTA tendría en nuestras comunidades. Esta táctica llegó a ser conocido como el Ayuno de Hambre por la Justicia dado que el aumento de la tarifa afectaría algunas de las personas más vulnerables en el condado que ya está siendo afectada por los recortes en todos los niveles de gobierno. Ocupamos un parque en la histórica Placita Olvera y lo llamamos Rosa Parks "Tent City".

Los 8 días que siguieron en el campamento fueron algunas de las experiencias más transformadoras, maravillosas y experiencias que ayudaron en consolidar a muchas personas que apoyaron y tuvieron la experiencia en el campamento y la belleza que era Rosa Parks "Tent City". Los objetivos de esta táctica fueron para movilizar una base más amplia de pasajeros de los autobuses y nuestros aliados para presionar a nuestros blancos clave en la mesa de la MTA como el alcalde Antonio Villaraigosa, el concejal José Huizar y Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, con la esperanza de que tuvieran un cambio de corazon e introducieran un moción para tener una audiencia pública y una voto pública sobre el aumento de tarifas propuesto para el 2010.

Venga a la próxima reunión mensual para compartir sus propias experiencias del campamento o si se la perdio venga dispuesto a escuchar sobre las tácticas, los avances y los próximos pasos en la campaña para detener la alza de tarifa racista de la MTA. Tenemos un montón de fotos y videos que documentaron este momento histórico en el tiempo pero ahora lo que tenemos que hacer es tener una conversación más profunda sobre la estrategia de lo que estamos dispuestos a hacer de aquí en adelante. Tenemos que seguir en los rostros de nuestros blancos clave y construir una fuerza más amplia en toda la ciudad que les deja saber que "ya basta" y que no continuarán como siempre sin que haya justicia para el pueblo.

버스승객조합의 정의를 위한 단식투쟁

버스승객조합의 회원 5섯명이 교통국의 요금인상 정책이 우리 지역사회 주민들에게 끼칠 어려움을 시 전역에 알리기 위해서 8일간 단식 투쟁을 했습니다. 이 켐페인은 버스승객조합의 정의를 위한 단식 투쟁 행사로 알려젔습니다. 특히 엘에이 카운티에 사는 주민들은 연방, 주, 및 시 정부의 사회 복지 프로그램 삭감등 경제 위기 속에서 많은 휘생을 하고있습니다. 우리는 엘에이 역사가 깊은 올베라 플라자의 공원에서 로자 파크스 천막 도시를 세웠습니다.

8일간 이 단식 투쟁을 진행하면서, 우리도 변화되고 그리고 매일 방문하는 회원들과 시 전역의 활동가들이 우리 운동에 감동을 받고 더욱 운동에 굳혀지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 이번 행사의 목적은 많은 버스 승객들과 우리의 동맹 단체들이 비야라이고사 시장과 후이쌀 시위원과 리들리-토마스 카운티 대표 및 여러 교통국 이사들에게 2010년 요금인상안 공청회와 공공 투표를 열도록 요구하는것이었습니다.

이번 월례회의에 오셔서 로자 파크스 천막도시를 방문한 경험을 얘기해주세요. 이번 행사에 참여하지 못 한분들은 요금인상 반대 켐페인의 다음 단게를 계획하는 일에 의견을 내주세요. 정의를 위한 단식 투쟁은 엘에이 시 전역에 우리 요금인상 반대 켐페인을 홍보하는데 동움을 줬습니다 하지만 이제부터 다음 전략을 더 상세히 계획할 때입니다. 교통국 이사들이 이번 요금인상을 그냥 진행하도록 놔둘수는 없습니다. 전 도시의 다른 진보 세력들과 단합하여 서민들의 삶과 정의를 짓밟는 정책을 막아야합니다.

윌셔 버스 전용 차선 프로젝트 소식
윌셔 버스 전용 차선의 환경 영향 보고서가 나왔습니다. 이번 6월21일부터-30일까지 4차례의 공청회가 열릴것입니다. 지난 5년간 버스승객조합은 대중교통의 향상과, 자동차 사용을 줄이고, 자동차에서 배출되는 환경 오염물질과 지구온난화를 발생시키는 온실가스를 줄이기 위한 환경정의 켐페인을 해왔습니다. 이 켐페인의 첫 승리가 바로 윌셔 버스전용차선 실행입니다. 작년 연방정부에서도 이 프로젝트에 2억7천만달러를 투자하기로 결정했고 남은것은 환경조사를 잘 마치고 시의회로부터 전용차선 도로 공사를 (윌셔거리 오른쪽 차선이 많이 손상되서 고치는 공사—도로 확장이 아닙니다!) 올해 말까지 승인 받는것입니다. 이번 공청회 나와서 윌셔 버스전용차선을 지지하며 빠른 실내에 환경 영향 조사를 마치고 차선을 실행해달라고 발언해주세요 !!
