Next Community Rights Monthly Meeting: Saturday, November 7th at 11:00am.
On the agenda this month:
1) Campaign update and next steps: October was a busy month for us! We successfully stopped a proposal that would have expanded LA's daytime curfew code to allow "truancy" ticketing on school grounds. Following this breakthrough, LAUSD held a special Board meeting on truancy and atttendance, at which we gave a 10 minute presentation. November is critical as we must keep the momentum going towards a moratorium and for alternatives to ticketing. Come here more on the campaign and discuss next steps!
2) Teach-in on PBS: LAUSD's Positive Behavior Support policy was passed in 2007 after years of organizing by educational justice organizations such as CADRE and Dignity in Schools exposing the harmful effects of "zero tolerance." The theory behind PBS is to keep studnets in the classroom, rather than the zero tolerance approach of suspensions, expulsions and arrests, all of which target Black and Brown students. PBS is the official district policy and is very progressive, but implementation has been slow. We will do a brief teach-in on this important policy and how we can use the PBS model to help us win an end to "truancy tickets."
3) Community Rights Membership: The Community Rights campaign is officially launching a membership dues structure and we want YOU to be one of our first official members! We know many of you already consider yourselves CR members, now we ask you to help us formalize this. Dues are $10-$50 sliding scale per year and members receive a membership card, Know Your Rights pocket-size card, and a newly created Community Rights bookmark!
General description of Community Rights Monthly Meeting
If you are a student, parent, teacher or community member concerned about the "pre-prison" conditions inside LAUSD schools--such as the ticketing of students on and around school campus and the conduct of school police towards our students--then join us for our Community Rights monthly campaign meeting on the first Saturday of every month. We meet from 11am-1pm, at the First Unitarian Church on 2936 West 8th Street (1 block east of Vermont) in Los Angeles. All are welcome; Spanish translation and childcare provided.
Next meetings: November 7th, December 5th
