Winning is only the Beginning

We have written and spoken often about the Transit Riders for Public Transportation work to restore the "private right of action" to the upcoming Federal Surface Reauthorization Act. But the demands of the TRPT go beyond the rights of the individuals to act against discrimination in agencies receiving federal funds. We feel it is also important to concretely acquire funding and capacity to monitor these agencies.

As this blog from KALW News shows, the fight against racist and discriminatory practices in the Bay Area didn't end with the hard won fight against the Oakland Airport Connector. The need for compliance with Civil Rights law requires an active system of oversight. Without the capacity for oversight, inequity in transit projects will continue to plague our communites.
