Washington DC to see two fare increases this year

The Nation's capital will be hit with 2 fare increases this year

Despite efforts by transit advocates and riders, the Washington DC Metro board voted a fare increase schedule that will raise fares twice in the same summer. The rail prices will be raised a total of 18%, the Metro Access customers fares will increase, the airport buses, used by many employees, will be double the cost, bus riders will find themselves paying peak prices on owl service, and the cyclists have been hit with a $130 increase in locker fees.

First fare increase began on June 27th

The second, going in to effect on August 1 will add a new fee structure for bus and rail riders including cutting the time that transfers can be used. The cuts were voted on by Metro as an alternative to service cuts and the agency has reported an operating deficit of $189 million dollars.

While the price for bus and rail commuters will increase, Metro has decided not to increase the price for parking rates at this time.
