Urgent Action: Tell FTA not to backpedal on civil rights!

Urgent Action: Send an email telling FTA not to backpedal on civil rights!

Take Action Now! Don’t whitewash civil rights -- federal intervention needed to restore bus service.

Please click here to send an email today to FTA Chief Peter Rogoff urging his agency not to backpedal on civil rights. The Bus Riders Union learned yesterday that the Federal Transit Administration appears poised to play along with Metro’s effort to whitewash the evidence of racial discrimination in years of bus service cuts. We must send a strong message to FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff that those who stand for civil rights around the country  won’t stand for this.

FTA’s review uncovered evidence that Metro’s bus service cuts violated civil rights regulations. Metro is now advancing the farcical argument that the evidence – civil rights analyses showing that successive rounds of bus service cuts discriminated against riders of color  – should be disregarded by the FTA in their decision on whether Metro violated the regulations. Metro’s own Civil Rights Department is now indicating FTA is ready to accept Metro’s argument.

The BRU urges Administrator Rogoff not to back down from FTA’s original findings, and continues to believe FTA should take the further step of finding LA Metro formally in violation of federal civil rights. In the midst of transit cuts and civil rights concerns facing communities of color nationwide, a campaign of over 600 letters sent to FTA last week made it clear that people around the country are watching closely and expecting Peter Rogoff to do the right thing.

Please take action now to make sure the Federal Transit Administration stands its ground on civil rights!
