Day 5 of the Hunger Fast for Justice
On Day 5 of the BRU Hunger Fast for Justice, the legendary Dolores Huerta joined the fasters.
Dolores Huerta has worked for progessive causes for many years. In addition to co-founding the National Farm Workers Association in 1962 with Cesar Chavez, she has worked tirelessly for fair and equal access to health care, housing, education, jobs, civic participation and economic resources for disadvantaged communities with an emphasis on women and youth.
Dolores Huerta adds the power of her support to BRU's Fight for Justice
Speaking to the press about the BRU's fight against the MTA's proposed fare increases and their plan to cut 388,000 hours of service, Ms Huerta said "making life difficult for the poor doesn't really help anyone." She further called on the MTA decision makers to look elsewhere for the money. That the solution was not to raise the transit fares and cut the services for the people who need them the most.
Helping raise the sprits of the fasters and BRU members
Ms Huerta graciously took time after the press conference to speak personal words of support to the fasters. She then made herself available to the many members who wanted a chance to speak with the freedom fighter who has been a figure of inspiration for many.
