From the Battle in Seattle to the US Social Forum 2010
Tammy: I was trying to get working-class communities of color interested in opposing WTO policies. It's really crazy to imagine that 10 years ago I was a young kid and at that point in time I was mainly doing support work and research for community-based organizations. That was the first time that I was involved in a mass mobilization bringing out 50,000 people! And it was exhilarating and scary and I was in awe of what we could do with collective action... November 30, 2009 marked the 10th anniversary of the Battle in Seattle, where 50,000 people hit the streets to shut down the World Trade Organization's 5th ministerial...and succeeded! The unprecedented alliance of labor, environmental and social justice advocates was able to give leverage to the Third World governments who were negotiating on the inside against the G-8.
In a radio interview with several other movement leaders, our own senior organizer, Tammy Bang Luu, reflects on the actions of that day in 1999 and on how the movement for global justice continues today through the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance and the upcoming United States Social Forum. She brings insights from sitting on the National Planning Committee of the US Social Forum 2010.
