How Bus-Centered Transit Works in Bogotá
This is an excellent 7-minute film that travels to Bogotá, Colombia to show you how the city runs a bus-centered transit system that is modern, inexpensive and efficiently moves 1.3 million people a day, integrating bicycles and auto free zones--and all without relying on rail or subways. The backbone of the system is a network of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines that run on Bus Only Lanes. Click here to watch the film.
The film also notes that Bogota built their BRT system by choosing it as an alternative to building a proposed new network of elevated highways!
This kind of BRT system would work in L.A. Bus Rapid Transit caught big attention this summer when the New York Times featured Bogotá's BRT system in a front-page story, "Buses May Aid Climate Battle in Poor Cities":

improves traffic flow and reduces smog at a fraction of the cost of
building a subway.Versions of these systems are being planned or built in dozens of

It is understandable that you find this attractive. It is very tempting, especially the free green circulator buses. But this is the wrong approach. We should not try to wedge non-auto systems into the auto-system. First we should stop the subsidy of the of the auto system. Make the buses fare-free. Then when the tipping point is reached where the auto is no longer dominant, the proper development can occur. Otherwise you will have a hybrid system that does not work well and and becomes a subsidized failure. How will it fail? Most people do not see that the auto system is heavily subsidized. As long as it is the dominant system, it will continue to suck the life-blood from the working class. To add BRT on top without deconstructing the auto-system is just adding another burden to an already unsustainable load.
