Student Rally Against Educational Racism: No Tickets on School Grounds!
On Monday, September 28th, dozens of students, parents and members of the Community Rights Campaign urged LAUSD Board Member Tamar Galatzan through phone calls and petitions to withdraw her motion in support of expanding Los Angeles Municipal Code 45.04, currently scheduled for the October 13th LAUSD Board meeting. LAMC 45.04, also known as LA's daytime curfew law, allows police to ticket students $250 for being "truant" or late to school. The proposed expansion of LAMC 45.04, introduced by Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Bernard Parks, would expand the jurisdiction of police to now ticket students on public school grounds for "truancy." Given that LAUSD "public school" students are 91% students of color, this proposal will be racially discriminatory.
It was an action-filled day: (Check out photos here)
- We got 65 calls into Galatzan's office and over 150 signatures on the petition.
- We were covered by over 7 media outlets...read La Opinion: En contra de darle más poder a la policía escolar.
