The Community Rights Campaign urges LAUSD Board Member Tamar Galatzan to withdraw her motion to support the expansion of LAMC 45.04

On Monday, September 28th, dozens of students, parents and members of the Community Rights Campaign urged LAUSD Board Member Tamar Galatzan through phone calls and petitions to withdraw her motion in support of expanding Los Angeles Municipal Code 45.04, currently scheduled for the October 13th LAUSD Board meeting.  LAMC 45.04, also known as LA's daytime curfew law, allows police to ticket students $250 for being "truant" or late to school.  The proposed expansion of LAMC 45.04, introduced by Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Bernard Parks, would expand the jurisdiction of police to now ticket students on public school grounds for "truancy."  Given that LAUSD "public school" students are 91% students of color, this proposal will be racially discriminatory.

It was an action-filled day: (Check out photos here)

Check out what two of our student leaders had to say

Lissett Lissett Lazo:

"Teachers, Not Tickets!" Even though it's been well over two hours, I still feel the energy of today's rally! It was so inspiring to see all of the dedicated students from Westchester and Cleveland High Schools spend their day off of school to support the Community Rights Campaign! Read More

Alejandra Alejandra Lemus:

It was inspiring to see the students coming out of Manual Arts High School (off Vermont and King) asking questions about our campaign and making calls to Ms. Galatzan. The energy on the street was great and the drum and chant crew just made everyone even more pumped up. Read More
