Alejandra Lemus: Student Leader Reflects on "Truancy Ticket" Rally
We just got back from an action on the corner of Vermont and King urging LAUSD Board member Tamar Galatzan to withdraw her motion to expand Municipal Code 45.04. The motion would allow police officers to give out $250 "truancy tickets" inside of public school grounds.
We had students from Westchester and Cleveland High School organizing and helping folks make phone calls to Board Member Tamar Galatzan. It was inspiring to see the students coming out of Manual Arts High School (off Vermont and King) asking questions about our campaign and making calls to Ms. Galatzan. The energy on the street was great and the drum and chant crew just made everyone even more pumped up.
All these students come from different backgrounds and they each have a different experience but they came together today to fight for their education. They're letting Board Member Galatzan know that this fight isn't just about stopping tickets, but it is also about creating a healthy learning environment where youth, especially Black and Brown youth, aren't pushed out of the educational system and pulled into the prison system.
