LA County riders grade MTA bus service - MTA did not make the grade!
| talks with BRU members in June |
In December, Mayor Villaraigosa opened up a public process to hear what bus riders wanted to see done with the 20% of Measure R funds for bus system improvements, and the BRU went on the offensive!
Dozens of BRU members worked to collect close to 3000 postcards from bus riders who were asked to grade their bus service in LA County. People were asked to grade MTA bus service anywhere from an A for excellent thru an F for extremely poor, on the following aspects: fares, night service, on-time performance etc.,.
In tandem, the BRU launched the Clean Air and Economic Justice campaign, a bus-centered, comprehensive program to combat the twin environmental and economic crisis. The plan calls for 500 expansion buses, the reversal of the 2007 fare increase, $150 million down payment for bus-only lanes and an expansion to service.
The results are in, the Clean Air and Economic Justice policy paper is hot off the press and ready for distribution and endorsement! The MTA bus service report card results support the need for the CAEJ plan.
An MTA spokesperson was quoted saying that the problem is MTA does not want empty buses out on the streets. On overcrowding, the MTA was given a C-, demonstrating that empty buses are hardly the issue. People want and need faster, more reliable bus service that can be achieved through purchasing 500 expansion buses that will also tackle the state's 11.9% record high unemployment rate through the creation of new jobs.
The BRU will hold a press conference on Friday August 28th at 11am on the northeast corner of Wilshire Blvd and Western Ave., to unveil the results of the 3000 person survey on blow-ups of report card visuals for Mayor Villaraigosa, Supervisor Ridley-Thomas and Councilmember Huizar asking them to adopt the Clean Air and Economic Justice Plan to improve mobility, impact the climate and public health crisis and to create green, unionized jobs for the residents of Los Angeles.
