First day on the buses with Spring Break Take Action
My name is Kassie Walters. I am a senior at Westchester high school. I am currently in the Spring Break Take Action program, and today was the first day we went out on the buses to organize people. Honestly it was very interesting, because it was the first time that I have actually tried to organize people on the bus. It was kind of awkward because you're on a bumpy metro bus trying to keep your balance and hand out flyers at the same time, lol! On top of that you are trying to inform the people about truancy tickets and school police and how you feel that they are ineffective and unfair. So that was really fun.
I wasn't too nervous because I have organized people before. The best conversation I had was with a man who worked for LAUSD, because... well...he works for LAUSD lol! And he agreed with everything that we were saying. He started telling me how he thought that truancy tickets are wrong because students shouldn't get in trouble for kid stuff. He said he felt as though this started after he got out of high school, and he always thought that it would change, but it hasn't. Also, he told us that he likes what the students are doing and we could look forward to seeing him at the upcoming meeting. I was really happy to hear this of course.
I think it was the best conversation because he works for LAUSD, and I'm so used to them having opposing views so him agreeing with us made me feel like we are one step closer to our goal. I am really looking forward to tomorrow and the rest of the week so I can inform more people.

Hey Kassie,
It was really fun organizing in the bus and that worker from LAUSD you met must have been really cool to have agreed with everything the flier said. Unlike you though i was pretty nervous on getting on the bus and talking to strangers, but then i met this guy before we got on the bus who was like really cool and started talking to me about the situation and how he agreed with everything the flier said after that everything else was cake. I am too looking forward to the buses today and hope everything turns well.

Organizing on the bus brought back memories. Kassie, I wish they would have put us together organizing, we would have had tons of fun. I got one really good contact. Hopefully he comes through and join our movement. I think our work together will let people know that they too need to join the fight. Shockingly, I am looking forward to getting back on the bus and organizing.
