As of Thursday, May 20, 11am, the Bus Riders Union kicked off a Hunger Fast for Justice to urge MTA Board to reject the proposed 2010 fare increase and 380,000 hours set to be cut from bus service scheduled for July 1st during the worst recession in 70 years.

BRU fasters encamp at Historic Placita Olvera

Five key BRU leaders have occupied a section of the Historic Placita Olvera--called Rosa Parks Tent City--and have embarked on a Fast for Justice with the support of dozens of BRU members and allies.

Why a hunger fast?

Our objective is to “bring the fare increase home” to literally and symbolically demonstrate the devastating impacts that a dual MTA proposal of a fare hike and service cuts will have on our members and our people-–proposals that will take food from their children’s mouth, clothes off their back, push them closer to homelessness, and force them to make horrific choices between medicine, rent or bus fare.

We need your support!

1. Please donate $5, $25 or $50 to help us buy

  • water
  • equipment (tents, canopy, banners, port-a-potty rental, flashlights)
  • supplies (sunscreen, blankets, garbage bags, etc)

2. Follow the hunger fasters on our Hunger Fast facebook page where they post throughout the day: updates, pics, vids, announcements of daily actions and events.

3. Come and spend time with us at our encampment, Rosa Parks Tent City--help us fill the space with music, poetry and art...help us keep our spirits strong in the struggle.
