ACT NOW: Urge the Governor to implement court's order on prison overcrowding - deadline Sept 18th!
Take Action NOW!
Call the Governor and State Leaders to Urge Full Implementation of Federal Court Order on Prison Overcrowding.
On August 4th, the federal courts ordered a reduction in the California prison population by 44,000 over the next 2 years to relieve the inhumane conditions caused by overcrowding. They ordered California to submit a plan by September 18th.
- The judges found conditions in prison to be so unhealthy that prisoners' constitutional rights are being violated, amounting to cruel and unusual punishment.
- The judges also asserted that reducing the prison population by 44,000 will NOT threaten public safety.
To respect the court order is to do what is obviously and morally necessary--significantly cut prison spending to close the deficit and address the enormous human and civil rights catastrophe that is the California prison system. With tens of thousands of Black and Brown people entrapped by the prison system and billions of dollars cut from health care, education and social services, federal court intervention is badly needed.
UPDATE as of SEPTEMBER 14TH:
The Governor has been denied a stay by the federal judges and the Ninth Circuit. The plan is due Friday, September 18th. We need to push the Governor to submit a comprehensive plan that respects human dignity and truly leads to the full reduction of 44,000 prisoners as ordered by the courts.
